Its all in the name!
The guidance & business support has been invaluable, as well as the help in negotiating the finance options – I feel so fortunate that this service has been accessible in York. Elizabeth Bakes, Bakes & Co Delicatessen & Coffee Bar
Elizabeth Bakes had the perfect background to set up a new delicatessen – not only with her well suited surname but also with her previous experiences of owning and managing a vegetarian café many years ago.
Elizabeth wanted to provide quality food products with excellent customer service in a prime location. With family support, she started baking products to sell at local food markets and festivals. The positive customer response encouraged Elizabeth to look for more permanent premises with the idea to develop an unusual deli‐style food outlet to eat‐in and take away.
Having been self‐employed before, Elizabeth had previous experience in setting up a business – and she was keen to do it again. She visited Business Support York & North Yorkshire (BSYNY) to update her knowledge – and quickly realised that she was not as ready as she thought. A boost of confidence was key, as was a clearer understanding of business planning and forecasting.
After receiving support and training in these areas from BSYNY, Elizabeth was able to work to produce a robust application for funding that enabled her to acquire the business premises. Elizabeth knows that the commitment to starting the business would have been far more scary and taken a deal longer without the support she received on the Start & Grow programme.
Bakes & Co is firmly established as a desirable eatery in York and Elizabeth is now working with local businesses to provide a door to door delivery service so that they can enjoy Bakes & Co produce at in‐house meetings and events.
Longer term, Elizabeth plans to consider opening a further outlet in a different city location too.
Elizabeth Bakes is a client of Business Support York & North Yorkshire (BSYNY), on behalf of Cavendish partner National Enterprise Network delivering business support in the North Yorkshire and Humber region.
Under the Start & Grow programme Elizabeth received 16 hours of support and dedicated training days and the business has created 5 new jobs.
