Handmade gifts from the UK showcased by new business startup
Jenn gave us the belief we had something worth working on Robert Wilton, Rose-May Handmade
Robert and Tracey Wilton opened their gift shop in June 2015. Specialising in selling handmade soap, and other unique handmade products, they wanted to showcase the talents of both professional and hobby crafters by selling products only made in the UK. Many of the stock items are handmade by them, recycling or reusing items that would have been thrown away.
Six months after opening Robert and Tracey realised they had taken the business as far as they could on their own. Trading during those first months without a business plan inevitably meant mistakes were made.
However, after seeking advice from Yorkshire Coast Enterprise (YCE) they were able to find a new and clear direction for the business, focusing on fine tuning the business model and updating the building.
“I am excited to see this business grow. Robert and Tracey are passionate and are taking advantage of all the support on offer to them.” Jennifer Crowther, Business Advisor from YCE.
The support was spent developing a business plan, and focused on setting goals and how these could be achieved. After obtaining a Virgin Start-Up Loan of £10,000 they set up a new website enabling them to widen their customer base. They also developed their marketing and advertising, purchased more stock, rebranded, and made plumbing and heating updates to the shop. Robert commented “Without Jenn from YCE we would not have gone to Virgin. She gave us the belief that we had something worth working on.”
Robert and Tracey Wilton are clients of Yorkshire Coast Enterprise who deliver business support on behalf of Cavendish Enterprise partner National Enterprise Network in Yorkshire & Humber.
Under Start & Grow Robert and Tracey received 25 hours of support, leveraged £10,000 finance for the business, and have created 2 jobs.
