Aspirations for cafe to be at No 1 in list of ‘go to’ venues in Cleakheaton
The rapport built during the business planning process has been valuable and we are now Bernadette's first point of contact when she has any business queries Haroon Qammar, Start & Grow Business Advisor
Redundancy from a career in management led Bernadette Samuel to realise a dream of setting up her own business.
Noticing the lack of a convenient coffee shop within the local area that would appeal to a broad sector of the community, Bernadette saw an opportunity to put her plans into action … and she took it!
Bernadette’s career in management made her acutely aware of the value of obtaining expert help and advice. and she sought assistance from West and North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce. In particular she was keen to get an independent view of her business idea, and her pricing and cash flow projections. Her business advisor, Haroon Qammar, worked with Bernadette to validate her ifeas and ensure that the business was set up correctly with all of the systems and registrations in place prior to launch. With the support of Haroon, Milly’s Cafe at No 1 opened in November 2015.
The help and advice provided under the Start & Grow programme enabled Bernadette to open her business with confidence. She used Haroon as a sounding board for her ideas and to tweak her cash flow and income projections where necessary. The time spent on the business planning process helped to reduce risks where possible, ensuring Bernadette could focus on developing the cafe’s menu and ensuring it was attractive to the target audience.
Bernadette is now focused on further establishing the business as the ‘go to’ venue for a coffee and a chat, attracting the full cross section of the community. She has future plans to extend the service by offering outside catering as an additional product.
Bernadette Samuel is a client of West and North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce, delivering business support on behalf of National Enterprise Network in Yorkshire and Humber.
